Hneflasel

6. Hneflasel
N65°10.19-W15°30.46

Built in 1847 west of Ytri-Eiríksstaðahnefill and 3 km SE of Heiðarsel, Hneflasel took over land that had belonged to Eríksstaðir. In fact, located 575 m above sea level, it may have formerly been a summer outpost of that farm. Not Only was the first male settler, Oddur Sæbjörnsson, born in Jökuldalur valley, but his housekeeper, Helga Guðmundsdóttir, was descended from there too. Hneflasel was permanently abandoned after the 1875 ashfall.
