Skumhottur (N65°02.548-W14°28.848) // 6 hrs.
Skúmhöttur is one of Egilsstaðir’s Pearls, which refers to 30 stunning hiking trails in the region surrounding Egilsstaðir. It is the second tallest mountain in the range between Fljótsdalshérað and Reyðarfjörður. It consists mostly of rhyolite which makes it brighter than the surrounding mountains but the peak itself is of darker rock formation. The first part of the name means “dark” and the latter part means “hat” so the name of the mountain means “dark-hat”. Walk from Þórisá and along the ridge in its slopes all the way up to the top of 1229 m. A good walk and an interesting mountain.
