These include the national parks previously existing at Skaftafell in the south and Jökulsárgljúfur in the north, so that today’s national park covers 14% of Iceland and ranks amongst Europe’s largest.
The unique qualities of Vatnajökull National Park are primarily its great variety of landscape features, created by the combined forces of rivers, glacial ice, and volcanic and geothermal activity.

The largest glacier in Europe

Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest glacier, with a surface area of 8,100 km2.
Generally measuring 400-600 m in thickness and at the most 950 m, the glacial ice conceals a number of mountains, valleys and plateaus. It even hides some active central volcanoes, of which Bárðarbunga is the largest and Grímsvötn the most active. While the icecap rises at its highest to over 2,000 m above sea level, the glacier base reaches its lowest point 300 m below sea level. Nowhere in Iceland, with the exception of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, does more precipitation fall or more water drain to the sea than on the south side of Vatnajökull. In fact, so much water is currently stored in Vatnajökull that the Icelandic river with the greatest flow, Ölfusá, would need over 200 years to carry this quantity of water to sea.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ width=”100%” custom_padding=”||18px|||”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.4.0″][/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ background_color=”#eaeaea” custom_padding=”14px|||||”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.29.3″ width=”90%” custom_padding=”10px|||||”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.0″ header_3_font=”|600|||||||” header_3_text_color=” #889438 “]

ADDITIONAL INFO

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,3_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″ width=”89%” min_height=”195px” custom_margin=”10px||10px||false|false” border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=” #889438 “][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_image src=”https://visitegilsstadir.is/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/vatnajokull-national-park2.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.4.0″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”3.29.3″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.7.7″ custom_padding=”|10px||10px|false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ link_option_url=”https://www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is/svaedi/snaefell/snaefellsstofa” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Additional information

Snæfellsstofa

Snæfellsstofa – Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður (vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is)

Opening hours
May: weekdays 10:00 – 16:00, weekends 12:00-17:00
June 1 – August 31: Every day from 10:00 – 17:00
September: weekdays 10:00 – 16:00, weekends 12:00-17:00

October: Tuesdaysand Wednesdays 10:00-15:00

Winter: Snæfellsstofa can be open by apointment.
