Sels\u00e1rvellir (N65\u00b040.61-W15\u00b022.92)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sels\u00e1rvellir, the innermost farm in the Almenningur area, was first settled in the summer of 1860 when Gr\u00edmur Gr\u00edmsson and his wife Ald\u00eds J\u00f3sefsd\u00f3ttir moved there. They are there in the 1860 census with two children and Gr\u00edmur \u0301s sister, Gu\u00f0r\u00fan, in the home. Gr\u00edmur lived at Sels\u00e1rvellir until 1871. Sigur\u00f0ur Einarsson took over from J\u00f3hanna T\u00f3masd\u00f3ttir in 1874, who farmed there after Gr\u00edmur. Sigur\u00f0ur and his wife, Gu\u00f0r\u00fan J\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir, had been at M\u00e6lifell and moved to Sels\u00e1rvellir as farm workers in 1866, so they knew the farm, and were there until 1877 in partnership with J\u00f3n J\u00f3nsson and Sigurbj\u00f6rg Sigur\u00f0ard\u00f3ttir, Sigur\u00f0ur and Gu\u00f0r\u00fan were still at Sels\u00e1rvellir on August 22nd 1876, but something happened to split up the partnership that fall, as shortly before New Year they moved to A\u00f0alb\u00f3l, which had been deserted for 13 years. Farming at Sels\u00e1rvellir ended in the spring of 1878 when J\u00f3n and Sigurbj\u00f6rg moved away. The ruins in the highland farm Sels\u00e1rvellir are different from the majority of the other highland farm ruins which makes Sels\u00e1rvellir especially interesting. The location of the buildings is similar to the architectural style of the last Nordic farm buildings in Greenland where the farm house is in the middle and all the other farm buildings are built around it to protect it from cold wind and harsh weather.<\/p>\n
