The largest dam is also the largest of its kind in Europe, 193 m high and 730 m long and comprised of 8.5 million cubic meters of material.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/visitegilsstadir.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/karahnjukavirkun4.jpg&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.29.3&#8243; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||18px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.29.3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>K\u00e1rahnj\u00fakar Dam\u00a0and H\u00e1lsl\u00f3n reservoir were created as part of Iceland&#8217;s most extensive construction project to date, and have since been visited by numerous tourists. The two tuff peaks named K\u00e1rahnj\u00fakar stand tall on the east bank of the J\u00f6kuls\u00e1 river and canyon, which ranks as one of Iceland&#8217;s deepest and most impressive. The long-term use of the reservoir here to turn the powerful turbines down at Flj\u00f3tsdalur Station began in late 2006.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a fantastic experience to walk along the rim of the dam and look down into the spectacular canyon below.
