M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur \u00e1 Fj\u00f6llum,\u00a0the highest located farm in Iceland<\/h2>\n

M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur \u00e1 Fj\u00f6llum is the highest inhabited farm in Iceland and is right in the middle of the wilderness of\u00a0Iceland – M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur in \u00d6r\u00e6fi\u00a0at 469 meters (1,539 ft) above sea level. Arriving there is like entering an oasis after having driven through the rugged wilderness of Iceland.\u00a0The farmland here at M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur is one of the most extensive in the country and it has been a farm here since the settlement of Iceland. There were important crossroads, the Trail of the Bishops and the Trail of S\u00e1mur, but you can read about S\u00e1mur in the Viking Saga<\/p>\n

Some ancient farm-ruins have been discovered north of the farm in\u00a0M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur, which have been declared as protected.<\/p>\n

Once the rig-road 1 lead to the farm M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur. As it was moved north of the farm, M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur was literally cut off. The farmers were thinking of closing and moving away. \u00a0But the farmer, Vilhj\u00e1lmur, decided on building up\u00a0his birthplace.\u00a0Vilhj\u00e1lmur’s ancestors had\u00a0lived on M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur farm since 1875 and Vilhj\u00e1lmur could not bear the thought of his family’s farm being abandoned. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Here high up in the wilderness of Iceland you\u00a0will find the restaurant\u00a0Fjallakaffi<\/a>\u00a0or the Caf\u00e9 in the Mountain, which serves traditional local food, the lamb on the menu was raised at the farm, they catch the char and shoot the geese and they smoke their own fish and meat.<\/p>\n

At M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur is a lovely little church, M\u00f6\u00f0rudalskirkja, built in 1949 by the farmer J\u00f3n A.\u00a0Stef\u00e1nsson (1880-1971). J\u00f3n\u00a0built this church himself in memory of his deceased wife, \u00de\u00f3runn\u00a0Vilhj\u00e1lmsd\u00f3ttir, who died in 1944. He even painted the altarpiece.<\/p>\n

The houses in M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur are built in the old turf house style, which was the traditional way of\u00a0building houses in Iceland. M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur farm offers accommodation for up to 27 people, and\u00a014\u00a0people at a time can stay in two houses called the\u00a0Ba\u00f0stofa. More people can stay at M\u00f6\u00f0rudalur in the summertime when the\u00a0campsite is open.\u00a0Visitors can book guided day tours at\u00a0Fjallad\u00fdr\u00f0 tourist services<\/a>\u00a0and explore the vicinity.<\/p>\n
