The falls descend the steep valley of J\u00f6kuldalur carved by the J\u00f6kuls\u00e1 a Br\u00fa river.<\/p>\n<p>The stream which the falls occur along, the Ysta-Rj\u00fakandi, is one of three streams bearing the name of Rj\u00fakandi in the immediate area.<br \/>To the southwest of the falls one can see the Fremsta-Rj\u00fakandi forming its own waterfall as it stairsteps down the valley, though in a considerably less impressive fashion. In between the two streams is the Mi\u00f0-Rj\u00fakandi, which has a considerably smaller drainage basin and was only a wet stain on the cliffs when we passed.
