June 1934 \u2013 28. Dec. 2019) \u00a0who was a track and field athlete and a triple-jump silver medalist at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia.\u00a0Vilhj\u00e1lmur set a new Olympic Record by jumping 16.26\u00a0m in the triple jump, only to be surpassed by\u00a0Adhemar\u00a0da Silva from Brazil.\u00a0This was the most unexpected result of the Olympics that year,\u00a0and his silver medal was Iceland&#8217;s first ever Olympic medal.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>The jump is represented in a silver statue on the stadium of Egilssta\u00f0ir.\u00a0In 1958 he took bronze in the triple jump at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1958_European_Athletics_Championships\">European Athletics Championships<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stockholm\">Stockholm<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sweden\">Sweden<\/a>, with 16.00\u00a0m. but his personal best was 16.70\u00a0m set in 1960 inLaugardalsv\u00f6llur in Reykjav\u00edk,\u00a0Iceland.
