Hafrahvammar is one of the 30 Pearls of Egilssta\u00f0ir region and refers to some of the most stunning hikes of the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Drive north of\u00a0the dam of\u00a0K\u00e1rahnj\u00fakar\u00a0reservoir along a\u00a0gravel\u00a0road fit for SUV\u2019s\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0crossroads by Laugavellir.\u00a0Drive downhill\u00a0to a parking area by Dimmuglj\u00fafur canyon. There you will find a sign containing information and the trail running through Hafrahvammar canyon.\u00a0The impressive canyon stretches about seven to eight kilometers from the northern part of Vatnaj\u00f6kull icecap towards the valley J\u00f6kuldalur (Glacier Valley). With its 200 meter high walls and only about hundred to hundred and fifty meters width they seem narrow and intimidating as everything is dark and steep. It is believed that the river J\u00f6kuls\u00e1 \u00e1 Dal, which was the second most powerful river in Iceland, dug the canyon over millions of years through the palagonite layer and formed the canyon.\u00a0In the cacnyon you will find a small cave,\u00a0Magnahellir, which lies in about 1,5 km. distance.\u00a0The name of the cave gets its name from a\u00a0farmer named Magni from the farm\u00a0Eir\u00edkssta\u00f0ir\u00a0who used to\u00a0keep his sheep there in winter.<\/p>\n
