Snæfell (N64°47.846-W15°33.631) // 6 hrs.
Snæfell is one of Egilsstaðir’s Pearls, which refers to 30 stunning hiking trails in the region surrounding Egilsstaðir.
Mt. Snæfell, which at 1,833 m is the highest mountain in Iceland that is not enclosed by glacier and has magnificent rhyolite formations. The mountain which is a part of volcanic center was created by eruptions over the last 400,000 years and it is not clear when the last eruption occurred and whether the volcano is still active.
In the surroundings of Mt. Snæfell is a good chance to spot herds of reindeer, especially in late summer grazing the alpine vegetation.
A marked trail leads up to the mountain. Start from the parking area approx. 1.5 km south of Snæfellsskáli hut. It is a long moderately difficult walk yet the trail is fairly smooth. The trail is staked and suitable only for experienced hikers. Elevation is approximately 1000 m and hikes’ distance is seven to eight km.
The cylinder with visitors’ log and stamp is up on the mountains’ top. If it is covered or hidden by snow there is a stamp in the Snæfellsskáli hut.

Snæfell hut, stands just west of the mountain itself. For reservations please call +354 470 0840 or contact snaefellsstofa@vjp.is
